About

The 1881 Research Institute (1881) – named after the year the Tuskegee Institute was founded – was formed to prepare underrepresented populations to enter engineering fields. 1881 also works to increase the advanced manufacturing labor pool in Louisiana and Mississippi.

  • Ironically, despite the increase in college access among African Americans, African Americans are highly concentrated in low-paying majors and are not being prepared to enter into lucrative STEM careers.
  • The number of unfilled manufacturing jobs have been rising since 2009, and according to the Labor Department, 2016 was the highest level of unfilled manufacturing jobs in 15 years.
